While Diabetes can be a difficult and stressful lifestyle, there are ways for you to make your life easier and more fun! We have set up X ammount of tips and tricks for you to make life a bit easier and make your diabetes feel like it's nothing!
- TIP 1: Set up an emergeny bag
Set up a little bag with your diabetes essentials, always keep something sweet with you like an energy bar for when you have low glucose levels. Keep spare injections and insulin for when you need it and always keep your tester and spare test strips with you, this is an absolute must have along with your glucogon injection for hypoglycemic seizures. Keep this bag with you at all times. And make sure it's always properly stocked everytime you leave the house!
- TIP 2: Inject before meals!
Before eating, INJECT atleast 20 minutes before so that you avoid high bloodsugar levels. And don't eat bad carbs, make the healthier choice. Not only will it be good for your self- esteem, but for your bloodsugar levels! (this doesn't mean you can't enjoy the nice things)
- TIP 3: Use the resources
As a diabetic, there are so many resources being set available to make your life easier, we find this in the Insulin pumps and newer glucose monitors, take advantage and make Diabetes your friend, these resources have been set available to you, why wouldn't you use them? PLus they make you look pretty cool to other people. Make it a fashion statement! These resources make that ball and chain a a lot lighter, and there are many options for amazing snacks that are made for Diabetics so that you can still have that cheecky coockie with less stress on your shoulders.
- TIP 4: ROTATION Please, please, please rotate injection sites! Rotation of injection sites is extremely important, when you inject on the same spot it creates scar tissue build up and it will slow down the absorbtion process of your Insulin until it will eventually stop absorbing. Also it leaves an ugly bump on your injection site which takes very long to go away
- TIP 5: Dont be scared.
Diabetes is serious, if you need help, ask. If you're scared, ask for help. There is no reason to be scared of your Diabetes, when recovering from a low bloodsugar it is okay to ask for some space and time to recover. Sometimes it is okay to not be okay and need other people.
- TIP 6: Excersize to avoid stress
Excersize regularly, not only is it good for your physical well- being but excellent for your mental well being! Stress can cause your sugar levels to raise and bloodpressure to go up, stress can also cause insulin resistance in the body. This has a negative impact on your diabetes as a whole, find an outlet and avoid stress as much as possible. Excersize is a fantastic way of releasing stress, staying active calms you down and generally makes you a happier person, also having an amazing impact on your bloodsugar. Try excersizing 4 times a week to lower stress levels and improve sugar glucose levels.
- TIP 7: When in doubt, test
This is a very common phrase in the diabetic community! It is a skill to manage your diabetes, a talent! As a diabetic you need to be able to manage your diabetes perfectly. So what do you do in times where you feel weird or don't know what to do with your situation regarding diabetes? You check your blood first, checking is extremly important and could be the difference of enjoying the night or ending up in hospital due to uninformed decisions. This tip is pretty self explanitory but also extremely important. So... When in doubt, TEST
